**Telegram’s new NFT gift-drop format changes everything. ** Earlier, when gifts were sold: –– first-come-first-serve, –– or oldest-account-first, …the scarcity felt artificially magical. You didn’t need deep pockets; you needed speed or an old account. That created cheap cost basis and huge asymmetry. Buy at $20, wait for the hype, upgrade to NFT, sell at $100. Easy narrative. The “alpha” came from access, not spending power. Auctions murder that advantage instantly. Auctions say: “You want it? Pay for it. Pay more than the next 19 maniacs in the room.” So what happens? The cost basis inflates to the true demand curve. You don’t get early special access anymore. You get whatever price the crowd collectively agrees is the maximum they’re willing to pay. That’s why prices are now $4k–$5k for a 1,000-supply gift. All future profit gets front-loaded into the auction price. The market extracts it from bidders immediately. The real question: If everyone can bid, and the price is already sky-high, why would anyone buy my upgraded NFT later at an even higher price? That’s exactly the flaw. Unless demand grows massively later due to: — status flex, — cultural hype, — utility, — scarcity psychology, — or a new wave of Telegram/Ton users who missed the auction… …there’s no economic reason for someone to buy your $5k NFT at $7k or $10k. The upside is now speculative, not structural. In the old system: → low entry cost → high later demand → easy flip In the auction system: → high entry cost → uncertain later demand → speculative flip It becomes a pure greater-fool game, and right now buyers are the fools volunteering to pay peak hype prices. If you think of this market like a breathing creature: first it was a lazy cat you could pet and it purrs profit, now it’s a tiger that asks, “How brave are you with $5k?” Can you still make profit? Sure, but now you’re betting on: future FOMO > present FOMO. And that’s always a dangerous bet. The better angle is to treat this less like early-access alpha and more like: “I’m buying ultra-premium digital merch in the hope it becomes a cultural artefact.” Some will, many won’t.
